Carlisle’s July 4th Weekend Guide: Summerfair, Fireworks, Floats & Family Fun
Your guide to fireworks, the Fairgrounds carnival, Anything Floats, and Summerfair favorites.
If your kids have reached the part of summer where they are somehow bored despite owning enough toys to open a small retail operation, Carlisle is coming in hot for July 4th weekend.
From free bowling and free movies to homemade boats wobbling across Children’s Lake, community pool time, fireworks, history tours, the Fairgrounds carnival, art activities, and an outdoor symphony concert, this weekend has big “we are absolutely not staying home” energy.
Quick Note: Summerfair and the Carnival Are Separate
The Carlisle Summerfair events and the carnival at the Carlisle Fairgrounds are not the same event. Summerfair organizes community activities throughout Carlisle and Boiling Springs. The carnival at the Fairgrounds is separate, but it is still a big part of the holiday weekend fun for many local families.
Here are the July 4th weekend events families should have on their radar.
Thursday, July 2: Cool, Classic, and Surprisingly Packed
Kids’ Bowling
11 AM to 1 PM | Midway Bowling, 1561 Holly Pike
Kids ages 5 to 12 can bowl for free, with shoes included. Pre-registration is required, and space is limited to 60 bowlers.
Parent hack: Air conditioning plus free bowling is basically a summer parenting coupon from the universe.
Free Movie: National Treasure
2 PM to 4 PM | Carlisle Performing Arts Center, 40 W. High Street
Free movie showing with first-come, first-served seating. No tickets will be sold.
Parent hack: This is your chance to introduce your kids to Nicolas Cage, secret clues, American history, and the most dramatic Declaration of Independence heist ever committed to film.
Carlisle Community Pool Open Swim
5 PM to 7 PM | Carlisle Community Pool, 1236 Franklin Street
Cool off from the summer heat with open swim at the Carlisle Community Pool.
The Summer of the Falcon Tour
5:30 PM to 7 PM | Craighead House, 318 E. Old York Road
This tour immerses participants in Jean Craighead George’s 1962 novel Summer of the Falcon, which is set at Craighead House. Guests can see the inside of the house, walk the grounds, and hear excerpts from the novel.
Wicked Walks: Crime Scenes of Carlisle
6 PM to 7 PM and 7:30 PM to 8:30 PM | Old Courthouse, 2 Courthouse Square
This walking tour is for ages 16 and older and is not suitable for children. Pre-registration is required, and each walk is limited to 25 people.
Friday, July 3: Block Party, Carnival, and Fireworks
Carlisle Independence Block Party Celebration
Cumberland County Historical Society, 21 N. Pitt Street
The Carlisle Independence Block Party Celebration brings freedom, family fun, friends, and food to the Cumberland County Historical Society. Families can enjoy burgers, hot dogs, Rita’s Ice, indoor exhibits, and outdoor festivities.
Indoor activities include Tavern Talk programs featuring George Washington, Patrick Henry, and special guest General Retired James Dubik at 10 AM and 6 PM in Todd Hall. Seating is limited, so arrive early.
Outdoor activities run from noon to 2 PM in the CCHS parking lot, weather permitting. The 250 PA featured exhibits, Well Actually . . . Myths, History & Stories of Cumberland County and Protest & Resistance in Cumberland County, will be open throughout the day.
Carlisle Fairgrounds Carnival
Carlisle Fairgrounds
The carnival at the Carlisle Fairgrounds is not part of Carlisle Summerfair, but it is a favorite holiday weekend stop for families who want rides, games, animals, treats, lights, and the kind of midway energy that convinces children they need one more game ticket.
Parent hack: If you are doing fireworks, the carnival makes a natural evening add-on. Your children will call it magical. Your wallet may call it character-building.

Fireworks
9:30 PM | Carlisle Fairgrounds, 100 Bryn Mawr Road
Fireworks will take place at the Carlisle Fairgrounds. Carlisle Summerfair does not run, sponsor, or raise funds for the fireworks. For fireworks-related questions and rain decisions, contact the Borough of Carlisle.
What to bring: Chairs, blankets, bug spray, water, and emergency snacks. Children become mysteriously starving approximately 12 minutes before fireworks begin.
Saturday, July 4: Floats, Freedom, and Small-Town Magic
5K Walk/Run
8:30 AM | Allison Hall, Dickinson College Campus
Start the day with the Carlisle Summerfair 5K Walk/Run. Pre-registration is required.
Anything Floats Craft Inspection
9 AM to 10:30 AM | Children’s Lake, Boiling Springs
Participants must be at least 13 years old and wear life jackets. Spectators can preview the homemade creations before they attempt their big lake moment.
Old Courthouse Tour
10 AM | Old Courthouse, 2 Courthouse Square
History comes alive during this tour of the Old Courthouse in Carlisle. Guests should be able to climb stairs and sit for a period of time. This tour is suitable for all ages.
Anything Floats Races
11 AM to 1 PM | Children’s Lake, Boiling Springs
This crowd favorite includes single innertube races followed by 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10-person races featuring homemade boats made from literally anything that floats.
Why we love it: Anything Floats is part engineering challenge, part comedy show, part community tradition, and part “I cannot believe that actually stayed above water.”
Swing Dance Lessons
3 PM to 4 PM | Green Door, 14 E. North Street
End the afternoon with swing dance lessons and maybe discover that your family has hidden dance floor talent. Or at least excellent enthusiasm.
Sunday, July 5: Art, Activities, and a Symphony Finale
Community Day at The Trout Gallery
10 AM to 2 PM | Weiss Center for the Arts, 240 W. High Street
The Trout Gallery will host a free Community Day with a bounce house, art activities, story time, exhibition tours, a scavenger hunt, face painting, snacks, prizes, and more.
Parent hack: This is the perfect Sunday reset after fireworks and carnival energy. Your kids still get activity and fun, but your nervous system gets something closer to civilized.
June Shomaker Summerfair Concert: Harrisburg Symphony
8 PM to 9:30 PM | Dickinson College, 235 W. High Street
Wrap up the weekend with the Harrisburg Symphony. The excessive heat or rain site is ATS Auditorium, 360 W. Louther Street.
What to bring: Lawn chairs, blankets, water, and the quiet hope that your children will be gently enchanted by live music instead of asking for snacks through the entire brass section.
Macaroni KID Weekend Game Plan
Thursday
Start with bowling, catch National Treasure, then cool off at open swim.
Friday
Visit the Independence Block Party, hit the carnival, and stay for fireworks.
Saturday
Watch Anything Floats at Children’s Lake, then enjoy a relaxed afternoon in Carlisle.
Sunday
Start with Trout Gallery Community Day and end with the Harrisburg Symphony.

Final Thoughts
Carlisle Summerfair is one of those traditions that reminds families how much fun can happen right in our own community. This weekend has history, water, art, fireworks, music, floating chaos, and enough kid-friendly options to fill four very full days.
Add the separate Carlisle Fairgrounds carnival into the mix, and you have yourself a July 4th weekend that is festive, local, and almost guaranteed to require a family nap by Monday.
